O que significa “break my fall” em inglês?

A expressão “break my fall” é muito usada na língua inglesa. Podemos usá-la quando “algo ou alguém alivia uma queda, ou ainda amortece uma queda”.

Em português, por exemplo, poderíamos dizer: quando eu caí da varanda do segundo andar, os arbustos ajudaram a aliviar a minha queda (ou seja, me impediram de cair/bater no pavimento). Em inglês, diríamos:

When I fell from the second-floor balcony, the bushes below helped break my fall. Quando eu caí da sacada do segundo andar, os arbustos abaixo ajudaram a amortecer minha queda. 

Então, temos:

break my fall aliviar minha queda, amortece minha queda

break his fall aliviar a queda dele, amortece a queda dele

break her fall aliviar a queda dela, amortece a queda dela

etc.

Vamos ver alguns exemplos:

He reached his arm out, trying to break his fall and ended up breaking his arm.  Ele estendeu o braço tentando aliviar sua queda e acabou quebrando o braço.

I slipped on the ice and broke my wrist because I stretched out my hand to break my fall. Eu escorreguei no gelo e quebrei meu pulso porque eu estendi a minha mão para amortecer minha queda.

He tried to help me by breaking my fall and ended up hurting himself. Ele tentou me ajudar amortecendo minha queda e acabou se machucando.

He stretched out his arms in the hope of breaking her fall. Ele esticou os braços para tentar amortecer a queda dela.

break my fall = cushion my fall aliviar minha queda, amortece minha queda

etc.
